Movie: Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995)

Image
A coming-of-age story that doesn't hold back, Welcome to the Dollhouse  may disturb some for a story told from a child's perspective that is heavy on sexuality, violence (rape is threatened) and enough profanity to make Quinten Tarantino blush.  But none of it is gratuitous.  This is actually an endearing story of a girl who feels out-of-place in her own family, not to mention among her peers.  The relationships she has are appropriately awkward and there are many hilarious moments.  You'll be rooting for Weinerdog and feeling her pain as she navigates the most painful days of adolescence.  Deftly written and directed by Todd Solondz with the debut performances of Heather Matarazzo, Brendan Sexton and Eric Mabius.  Available on Amazon Prime Video and DVD .

Movie: Flower (2017)

Shot in 17 days with a half-million dollar budget, Flower  is a fascinating, character-driven tale about a Erica Vandross, a teenage girl who uses sex as a way of controlling the world around her.  Her mother, who is one of those "My child is my best friend" idiots, is trying desperately to have a relationship of her own with a good man.  However, Erica's behavior scares any potential suitors away.  When her mother finds a kindhearted, determined man, Erica forges a deep relationship with his troubled son, Luke.  When she decides to exact revenge on Luke's accused molester, the two quickly find the situation going off-the-rails. Making the most out of a good story are strong performances, particularly Zoey Deutsch and Erica and Joey Morgan as Luke.  You can find it on Hulu , Amazon Prime Video , and DVD .
